Jaw Dysfunction
Clicking or pain in the jaw can make everyday activities of talking and chewing very uncomfortable.
Usually the pain comes from temporomandibular joint (TMJ). In essence the jaw is a hinge and tightening on one side of the jaw can cause a deviation of the normal hinge mechanics. Over time the TMJ loses its smooth interaction and clicking can develop.
To fully understand why the deviation of the jaw has occurred we often need to look at what is happening throughout the whole kinematic chain. Long term postural asymmetries or loss of balanced fascial dynamics can tension up one side of the body. This leads to a tightening of one side of the neck and a pulling through the jaw causing the pterygoid muscle inside the mouth to tighten.
Jaw related Conditions
Temporomandibular Dysfunction (lock jaw, clicking).
Postural or structural asymmetry affecting the Transverse Fascial Planes.
Cranial Fascial Restrictions.
Techniques Frequently used
Soft tissue release of the muscles involved: pterygoid, masseter and temporalis.
Biomechanical assessment and treatment of contributing factors.
Jaw stretches / exercises.
I contacted Ed for help with my painful jaw due to teeth grinding / clenching. He was able to identify and manipulate problem areas in my back, shoulders and even teeth that were affecting my jaw. Would definitely recommend!
